Dressage Soul Sister: Found.

From start to finish, reading the new novel The Dressage Chronicles by Karen McGoldrick, felt like sitting around a barn aisle somewhere with close friends and a closer adult beverage, gossiping for hours about horses and the crazy cool people who surround them.

By the time I reached the last page of this book, a debut effort by dressage rider and trainer extraordinaire McGoldrick, this show jumper was ready to reach across the discipline divide and give her equestrian soul sister a fist pump.

"I've been around horses all my life, and really appreciated the author's grasp of the reality of the working student/big show world environment. She brought it to life with her well developed characters and it was easy to follow the action as she laid out the scenes. I look forward to reading more from her, maybe a collection of short stories, or a sequel to track Lizzie's journey."

This is a must read for every horse lover and every rider. Reading this book felt like watching in a mirror and one knew exactly what the main character was going through. Sometimes I laughed out loud and sometimes the characters surprised me. Once started I never took the book away. I couldn't stop reading. Now I am exhausted because I rode every single stride they rode, got anxious, excited, nervous and stressed like they did and learned so much about horses and what it's like to become a dressage rider.

A big thank you to the author for writing this book for all horse lovers and for people who would like to understand "us" riders.

I am looking forward to read more from Karen McGoldrick in the future!

Dressage Chronicles: A dressage novel with street cred

Why I loved it (the main reason):

It's a slice of life, or at least life on a pretty good day. Dressage Chronicles has engaging, believable characters, all of whom have flaws and strengths. As a reader, I enjoyed the parade of divas and diva behaviors, but it is never nasty, and always relayed in a spirit of good humor. The author gives thoughtful treatment to each character, from the barn worker to the manager, the working student, the trainer, and even to the imperious and difficult barn owner. I feel like I know them, and I have versions of some of them in my own life. I guess this is what novel critics would call character development. The people feel real to me. And they're likeable.

"Being a dressage rider and a former working student made this book a must read for me. The characters became myself and people from MY world; the settings were the stables and arenas of MY life. I read and reread the descriptions of dressage movements I have yet to attempt, and those that are works in progress - feeling like I was Lizzy riding.

My enjoyment of the book goes beyond the obvious parts I could identify with so well. I became absorbed in the interaction of the characters and their story beyond the horse world. The fact that horses were the theme in their lives was just the icing on the cake!

This was a wonderful read, I finished wanting more - wanting to continue on in the lives of Lizzy and Margot. And I immediately wanted to share my enjoyment with others.

I look forward to the Author's next novel. :-)"
