Jim Lawrence, a former compatriot in a unit at the tip of the spear, has come up spades with his latest book, American Veterans: Their Stories of Service and Valor. I will always pick up a collection of personal experiences, such as American Veterans, when I want to get a sense of what was actually happening in the individual “wars” and “battles.” Every combatant has a story, and those stories are often more informative about the nature of war than the broader historical accounts. To each his own, but I prefer books like those written by Lt. Col. Jim Lawrence, a true hero in his own right. This one is a winner.
