My father and father-in-law were both members of the Greatest Generation. They were both in the Navy and served in the Pacific Theater. I know very little of what they did during WWII. With that in mind, I wanted to get my story on paper for my children and grandchildren. I kept a daily calendar while in Vietnam and for a couple of years before and after as well. That calendar was the basis of most of the stories included in the book. Rather than limit my story to just Vietnam, I decided to treat the book as sort of an autobiography. Thus, I began with some of my early recollections of growing up in Atlanta, Georgia. For most of the material recounting my early childhood, elementary school, high school, and college years I depended on my memory—such as it is! Much has happened since my return from Vietnam and with that in mind I’m already considering a second book.
